03/27/2006: "BOOK FESTIVALS"

I have just attended my first book festival as an invited speaker. This was The Essex Book Festival, which occurs every year in March and lasts for slightly over a month. One of the reasons I was invited is that my humorous Rafferty & Llewellyn crime series is set in Essex.

Although slightly nerve-wracking, I enjoyed the event, which involved the usual giving of a brief intro about myself and my books, a thirty minute talk and a reading, followed by questions and answers.

We writers may think we work hard to get all those words together. And we do, of course. But this event made me appreciate just how much work goes on behind the scenes, particularly for a festival such as the one in Essex, which has such a long duration and covers locations all over the county.

So I'd like to say a word of thanks to all festival organisers everywhere for all the sterling work they put in. You really are troupers; as are all the heavy mob who have to shift chairs, cups and saucers and God knows what else, from location to location, from library to theatre and on to yet another library.

Well done, one and all!
