Chapter One
One hot August Thursday afternoon, Maddie Faraday reached under the front seat of her husband's Cadillac and pulled out a pair of black lace bikini underpants. They weren't hers.

Thus begins Jennifer Crusie's "Tell Me Lies", which is oh-so-mistakenly classified as women's fiction and a romance. To me, this reads as a perfect example of a murder mystery: there characters are original and 3D, the plot is quirky, the pace a perfect balance of quick without leaving you behind. There twists in the tail are unpredictable.
If you want an example of a non-formulaic murder mystery, I can recommend this one.
